Common questions.

How is BMI calculated?

BMI is your weight in kilograms divided by the square of your height in meters. In imperial units the same number comes out as 703 times your weight in pounds, divided by the square of your height in inches.

What are the WHO BMI categories?

Under 18.5 is underweight. 18.5 to 24.9 is the normal range. 25.0 to 29.9 is overweight. 30.0 and above is obesity, with sub-categories Class I (30 to 34.9), Class II (35 to 39.9), and Class III (40 and above).

Is BMI a perfect measure of health?

No. BMI is a rough screening number that does not account for muscle mass, frame size, age, sex, or body composition. Two people at the same BMI can have very different bodies. Talk to your prescriber about what number is right for you.

Does Weight Commit recommend a target BMI?

No. Weight Commit is a personal logbook. You set every goal yourself. The calculator on this page exists as a generic informational tool, not a recommendation.
